The play of light

You are about to start a musical tour around the Tudeley windows.

The windows at All Saints Tudeley are arranged to chart a particular spiritual narrative, both inspired by Psalm 8 and by the journey between death and new life after resurrection.

When entering the church, the visitor faces a wall with small-sized windows, mostly in bluish tones.

The “first” window, representing Adam and Eve, is located at the rear part of the church. Moving forward to the right, the visitor progressively sees four other windows, evoking the human condition and God’s creation. Windows 6 to 9 symbolise death and the path to resurrection. The main window, above the altar, is the “memorial window”, the first to have been designed by Marc Chagall, in memory of Sarah d’Avigdor Goldsmid. The visitor exits the church facing two large-scale windows in yellow tones, which contrast significantly with the other ten windows, and which symbolise resurrection.

In the following pages, you will be invited to explore each of the twelve Tudeley windows. For each window, there is a soundtrack you can activate at the top of the page. Click on each window to see details and explore the musicality they inspire.
