Window 12

On a background of pale gold
I would trace with quaint design,
Penciled fine,
Brilliant-colored, Moorish scenes,
Mosques and crescents, pages, queens,
Line on line,
That the prose-world of to-day
Might the gorgeous Past's array
Once behold.

Emma Lazarus, Arabesque (extract)

The term “arabesque” commonly refers to a set of moving or ornamental lines, often evoking interlaced vegetation in a circular, swirling rhythm. In music, the term Arabesque is given to a piece with an ornate melody.
